A to Z Horror: American Carnage (2022)

Over on instagram, we’ve been following the Nightmare on Film Street 31 Day Horror Challenge so it has been awhile since we’ve updated you on our conquest through all of the Cabell County Public Library has to offer in the horror genre from A to Z.

So, we almost forgot to sneak this watch in before our next post, a classic spooky season favorite, and one of the most famous haunted house movies of all time.

But first,

American Carnage (2022) is a work of speculative fiction written by Julio and Diego Hallivis and directed by the later. It has the distinction of being a film of at the time mostly unknown but familiar upcoming actors and actresses including Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Jenna Ortega.

Yes, that Jenna Ortega. She has made a name for herself in the indie horror realm, even obtaining the status of Scream Queen, if we do say so ourselves. We first became fans catching bits and pieces of her in the Disney channel original Stuck in the Middle. From there we started seeing her propel with roles in Scream (2022), X (2022), Studio 666 (2022), and this movie all in one year. Girl is killing it in the horror game, so much so, it propelled her into the iconic role of Wednesday Adams.

So, if you’ve been following her career, try to source this one out as it is a decent little take on things we’ve seen before. It watches almost like a student film whose director happened to have some familiy money to spend and had the prompt of “Soylent Green meets Stepford Wives who are actually illegal aliens in a concentration camp.”

It was fun, and entertaining, and great to put on and zone out to. You’re really able to follow along with the basics even if you get sidetracked easy. But it’s also got some personality to it, it just unfortunately hits you over the head with it and dumbs it down to a 6th grade reading level for those folks.
